Gudrun Pflueger

Born Austrian Gudrun spent her whole childhood and youth growing up in
the Austrian Alps. The big forest right behind her patent’s house was
her playground and later, when she decided to become a professional
athlete (b.a. 4 times Worldchampion in Mountain Running, 20times Austrian
champion in xc skiing and athletics and xc skiing Worldloppet Winner,) her
trainings terrain. Realizing her affection to Nature and the outdoors, she
decided to study Biology at the University of Salzburg, Aut. After
receiving her Master’s degree, she applied for a volunteer position at
the Central Rockies Wolf Project, based in Canmore, AB. For the next
winter, she zic-zaced with her skies and on foot the forests of Kootenay
NP, living at the Kootenay Crossing Warden Station, following and studying
the local wolfpack. During that time she realized, that this kind of job
is tailored to her skills, education and passion:. Being a field biologist
combines physical fitness with the opportunity to be in the great Outdoors
and mainly to work for its conservation through collecting data and
increasing knowledge. In the past 5 years she worked on 6 different wolf
research project in very different parts and ecosystems of this country:
from the Subarctic to SW Alberta, from the Aspenparklands to the lushy
temperate Rainforest along BC’ s Pacific Shoreline. Gudrun shares the
klischee of the wolf being a flagship species and an indicator for the ‘health’
of a certain ecosystem but even more sees the condition of a
wolfpopulation as an indicator of the attitude and tolerance of the local
people. Gudrun is dedicated to share her experience with those wild
creatures with the public
