The Canadian Intermountain Joint Venture CIJV

The North American Waterfowl Management Plan (NAWMP) is a Canadian – US - Mexican agreement to secure, maintain and enhance significant waterfowl habitat. Joint ventures involving government and non- government agencies are a means to achieve this goal. There are currently 3 habitat joint ventures in Canada: Eastern, Prairie  & Pacific Coast and now in the making the Canadian Intermountain Joint Venture (CIJV). It has been one of my most exciting projects, sitting on both the Board of Directors and the Technical Committee. What is different about the CIJV is that it includes all birds and all bird habitats.
The region covers 473,000 sq. km and includes all the mountain national parks. It is delineated by the crest of the Coast Mountains on the west, the eastern crest of the Rocky Mountains, the southern extent of the boreal forest to the north, and the boundary with the United States on the south. CIJV  Map

         Vision...

The Intermountain is a landscape that supports healthy populations of birds, maintains biodiversity and fosters sustainable resource use.

Mission…

Working together to maintain, enhance, restore and manage habitat for the benefit of wildlife and people in the Intermountain

The prospectus will be finished and ready to submit at the next North American Bird Conservation Initiative meeting in February, 2003. Once approved it will allow the CIJV to apply for and access North American Wetland Conservation Act (NAWCA) core funds - $18.5 million. http://wetlandscanada.org/nawca.html

West Nile Virus
Bird Surveillance Coordinator for the East Kootenays

The goal of surveillance is to find out as early as possible when the virus moves into the province.
Wildlife personnel in four areas of B.C. monitored bird deaths up to Sept. 30, 2002.   Birds in the crow family, which includes crows, ravens, jays and magpies were targeted. A number of dead birds were tested for the virus. All results were negative in BC.

West Nile Virus ruled out in deaths of valley birds
... As of today there are no records of the West Nile Virus (WNV) in British Columbia," said Larry Halverson, a Parks Canada Agency naturalist. ... www.bowesnet.com/valleyecho/Z04_story4.html - 5k -

For more information: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/pphb-dgspsp/wnv-vwn/index.html
Please continue to report dead birds as the surveillance continues
